Have your teeth turned yellow with age? You might just be telling yourself that they turn yellow with wisdom, but there are wise ways to keep your teeth looking their whitest.

Believe it or not, there are ways to get that celebrity-grade smile without the expensive treatments, dentist whitening, or chemical-filled teeth-whitening strips.

Why purchase something over the counter or make an expensive trip to the dentist, when you have a DIY teeth whitening shop right in your own home?

Try a few of these natural DIY teeth whitening ideas:

  • Citrus peels: Most commonly done with orange peels, instead of tossing those orange peels right away, rub the white side on your teeth for a minute or so and then brush your teeth afterwards. Repeat for a week to see results.
  • Strawberries: Mash up strawberries and rub them on your teeth for a minute, then brush. Repeat for a week to see results.
  • Baking soda paste: Mix a bit of water with baking soda to form a paste, and brush your teeth with this for a week instead of normal toothpaste. Rinse with mouthwash for fresh breath.
  • Baking soda and lemon juice:Fresh lemon juice. Make a paste with the lemon juice and baking soda. Dry your teeth or excess saliva and brush with paste, leave on for a minute but no longer, then brush it off and rinse.
  • Oil pulling: Commonly done with extra-virgin coconut oil, take a teaspoon full into your mouth first thing in the morning before eating or drinking anything, swish it by pulling it in and out of your teeth for 20 minutes, then spit it into a garbage can. People typically do this as it draws out toxins from the body, and many report that it whitens their teeth!
  • Water rinse: Rinse with water after each meal you eat. This will help remove food particles and can help prevent your teeth from staining.
  • 50/50 peroxide water rinse: Either mix the peroxide with the water, or swish with the peroxide and follow it up with water, this can really help bring out those pearly whites!
  • Eat healthy snacks: Snacks such as pears, apples, strawberries and carrots help your mouth to produce more saliva, thus removing bacteria from your mouth.

Reasons for Yellowing and Discoloration

Age is not the only contributing factor to the discoloration of teeth. As a matter of fact, it may just be something that you are doing or eating! In case it’s you that needs to make some changes, here are some reasons why your might have yellow or discolored teeth:

  • Poor dental hygiene: Probably the most obvious culprit is not brushing your teeth for long enough, or frequently enough.
  • Pregnancy: Pregnancy can cause nerve damage, causing discoloration, and some pregnant women even lose a tooth or two!
  • Accidents: You may have some nerve damage if you were involved in a car accident or anything that could have impacted your face or jaw.
  • Antibiotics: Some antibiotics are known to discolor teeth; if you are taking antibiotics, check and see if this is a side effect.
  • Smoking: Nicotine can turn your teeth yellow, or even brown. If you are a smoker and are concerned about your dental health, your best bet is to kick the habit.
  • Coffee and tea: The chromogenic agents in coffee and tea are known to discolor teeth. If you drink these beverages, brush your teeth afterward or use a good mouth wash.
  • Disease: Some diseases can cause discoloration of the teeth. Have you had a check up lately?
  • Skipping bi-annual cleanings: There is a reason why insurance covers two cleanings a year, it can prevent dental problems and keeps your teeth looking great. If you have insurance, us it!

A helpful tip, which I learned recently, is to brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste before eating or drinking anything in the morning, not after.

This is because you will brush away all the bacteria and plaque built up overnight and seal your enamel with the fluoride which will ultimately protect your teeth.

Eating breakfast, especially if it’s acidic or sugary, can weaken the enamel and brushing right after eating can cause damage to the weakened enamel.
