With every TV personality displaying perfect white teeth you can’t help but what that dazzling smile too. That considered who wouldn’t jump at the opportunity to get sparking white teeth by just rubbing banana peels on them for a few minutes a day? No matter how crazy it sounds.
Why our teeth need whitening
There are three common reasons why people end up wanting to whiten their teeth:
- Enamel eroding foods
Besides the mechanical wear and tear your enamel gets from daily chewing there are specific foods that encourage erosion as well. Sugary starch foods such as chocolate covered donuts are good example. The carbohydrates found in these foods ferments causing the bacteria in the mouth to produce acids that eat away at the teeth enamel. When your enamel is eroded it’s easier for foods and drinks to leave stains on them.
- Tobacco in your mouth
Many cigarettes contain tobacco and tar which is well known for staining teeth. In fact any oral contact with tobacco results in teeth staining whether it’s from chewing tobacco, smoking cigarettes and pipes or anything else. The same way the cigarette filter turns dark yellow when smoking, so do your teeth.
- Acidic and staining foods and drinks
Carbonated drinks such as cola or alcoholic beverages like wine contain acidic ingredients that eat at tooth enamel allowing the color of the beverage to easily stain the teeth. Acidic sports drinks have also been proven to have the same effects. Other teeth staining foods and drinks minus the acid include tea and beetroot. When taken regularly enough colorful foods can have a huge impact on the color of your teeth.
Teeth whitening home remedies
Home teeth whitening remedies are effective enough to remove diet related stains
- Strawberry solution
Mash and mix one strawberry with half a tea spoon of baking soda to create a paste. Put the paste on a soft toothbrush to spread the paste onto your teeth and leave it on for 5minutes before you rinse away. Do this once a week for results. Strawberries contain vitamin C which is good for washing away plaque; and malic acid which is effective in the removal of stains from teeth. Baking soda is an abrasive chemical compound that is used in many types of toothpaste to remove surface stains.
- Banana Solution
Peel a ripe banana and cut out a piece of the banana peel to use on your teeth. Rub the inside of banana peel against your teeth for 2 minutes then rinse off and brush your teeth with toothpaste. Do this morning and night daily for results. Banana peels contain potassium, magnesium and manganese which work together to help whiten your teeth.
- Baking Soda and Lemon
Mix baking soda with lemon juice to create a pasty solution. Spread the paste onto your teeth with a soft toothbrush then leave it on your teeth for one minute. After that rinse the paste off and brush your teeth with proper fluoride toothpaste. This whitening treatment should only be done once a week as the acid in the lemon will erode the protective enamel around your teeth. Although lemon causes the enamel to erode it is for this reason that it can effectively remove surface stains.
